naoshima ferry terminal

naoshima island, which is hosting the famous art biennale, is besides all the artworks known for the large concrete museums by tadao ando. sanaa`s ferry terminal is the perfect contrast: the building reflects lightness, space and free circulation.

the structure of the ferry terminal consists basically of two elements: one large flat roof and a grid of thin columns with glass boxes of various sizes which seem to be scattered freely underneath the roof. within those boxes are the very basic necessities needed for the terminal: an office, a café and a shop.
